X2Impact Instrumented Mouthguards

X2Impact’s wearable monitors report potential head injuries for immediate evaluation by coaches and doctors on the sidelines. They focus on helmet-specific sports, such as football, lacrosse, and boxing. This system are embeds high-performance accelerometers into custom-fitted, boil-and-bite mouthguards. 

This is the second design Anvil Studios collaborated on with X2 Impact. Similar to the previous program, again our team mocked up and 3D printed dozens of flexible prototypes for the development team to personally evaluate. This configuration became known as “hammerhead” as we moved the electronics out of the mouth’s bite plane. By locating the mass of the electronics in the tethering element that protrudes from the front, we were able to slim down the form’s bulk inside the mouth, providing a more comfortable wearing experience for smaller mouth athletes. The frontal “binky” element is an easy grip, provides attachment for helmet tethers, and offers a natural location for branding.
