Sausalito Audio Subwoofer

Sausalito Audio partnered with Anvil Studios, Inc. for the industrial design of a free-standing sub-woofer for their high end home audio portfolio. Their design language communicated “intricate precision” through detailed grill patterns, honesty of materials selected, and the quality of fit and finish as applied to their existing in-ceiling speakers. 

The sub-woofers' architecture is a downward facing driver, requiring a large air gap under the base for adequate airflow. Our design team explored many options for visually and physically elevating the large mass up off the ground. Together with the Sausalito Audio team, we selected a design gesture with a prominent ribbon element that visually wraps around the housing in a continuous line, much like the stitching on a baseball. The ribbon is fabricated from aluminum and doubles as the supportive feet structure. The brushed finish relates to the in-ceiling speakers’ Color/Material/Finish (CMF), while also providing an elegant contrast to the black satin finish of the driver’s external housing.
