RareCyte CyteFinder HT
Rarecyte, Inc. manufactures life science equipment that separates a single cell from billions for analysis. Their original instrument (also designed by Anvil Studios) was developed to scan, identify, and pick out cells on a single slide. This new system, the CyteFinder HT, is Rarecyte’s automated instrument designed for high-throughput, scanning up to 80 slides unattended. Rarecyte returned to Anvil Studios to create the physical user experience and industrial design for this new system.
The design language from the original instrument is carried forward to the newer CyteFinder HT instrument by retaining the clean geometric form with generously arched top surfacing and side cut outs delineating corner feet. Application of a bold accent color on a neutral toned body further draws focus and attention to the user interaction zone.

On this new instrument design, the user now has multiple methods of interaction. The main gesture arches forward to physically present the primary interface area, which is where the user can insert up to four cartridges, each holding up to 20 slides for automated scanning. Rejected slides are discarded and collected behind the upward hinging door within the notch area on the right.
Design details include a dynamically angled partline celebrating the hinged opening between the top and bottom enclosures, power and connectivity ports echoing this angularity, and a rear venting pattern paying homage to the brand’s original logo.
