Precor Resolute Selectorized Tower
Precor partnered with Anvil Studios to provide Industrial Design concepts for redesigning the tower stack for their Resolute Selectorized Line of strength equipment. The main objective was to create a unifying design language that visually communicates the Precor Strength Brand while also improving the overall experience, especially for new users.
Our design team began the project with an intensive one month User Experience tour of gyms; observing and interacting with both Precor and competitive equipment. Our core investigation focused on improving the user experience for beginners and the elderly. We noticed people placing personal items (towel, water bottle, phone, etc.) on dirty floors during their workout. We also saw that instructional graphics were ignored by expert users, and yet confusing for novice users who didn’t realized the QR codes led them to instructional on-line videos. These observations were the basis for our ideation explorations which presented large graphics, clear and minimal visuals, and affordances for storage of personal effects, including a phone holder for watching instructional videos.
Our design intent utilized existing tubing for the structural elements. We designed a top cap to be an aluminum casting that boldly presents the fly cut Precor logo visible from anywhere in the gym. We designed a stable foot with an incorporated storage trough that elevated the users personal items up off the floor. Most notable is the large floating band element that wraps around the stack to help draw users in. This band helps hide weld and part lines, while providing an optimal location for minimized instructional graphics, complete with integrated smartphone holders. The dark color palette features smoked translucent shroud covering the weight stack and black frame components. This combination creates a calm, unified, and sophisticated gesture that showcases and emphasizes the graphics.
