Power A :: Media Center for 3DS
Anvil Studios, based in Seattle, WA, was commissioned by PowerA to design and develop the Nintendo 3DS Media Center, a multifunctional accessory aimed at dramatically enhancing the audio and charging experience for 3DS users. The Media Center was designed to provide powerful, amplified stereo sound via integrated 50mm drivers while accommodating seamless charging and media playback during gaming or movie watching. The unit connects to the 3DS through two precise alignments: a modified USB-style power connector located on the rear-left of the console and a centrally positioned 3.5mm stereo jack on the front. To enable superior audio performance, the design included audio controls such as a 5-band equalizer, bass boost, volume, fader, and a dual headphone jack system, giving users advanced sound customization and flexibility.
The Media Center’s industrial design draws directly from the Nintendo 3DS aesthetic, featuring a slim, edgy, and compact profile that complements the device’s "gamer-cool" visual identity. Emphasis was placed on intuitive usability and portability: the 3DS docks and undocks effortlessly, while the housing closes securely around the console for easy transport. Additional storage compartments were integrated into the body of the Media Center to house game cartridges, earbuds, and cables, making it a highly practical travel companion. The product sits at a slight forward angle to enhance on-screen visibility, and speaker modularity was explored to further improve sound resonance. Altogether, the Media Center represents a seamless blend of utility, performance, and stylish design tailored to the needs of mobile gamers.
