PlenOptika asked Anvil Studios to create an appropriate design gesture for a new handheld device consistent with PlenOptika’s flagship product, the QuickSee.

We was tasked with developing the next-generation QuickSee Free handheld optical instrument for PlenOptika, focusing on refining both the user experience and industrial design while maintaining functional continuity with the existing configuration. The new design had to align with QuickSee’s established visual language and include specific ergonomic and operational enhancements. These include a comfortable, balanced handle with an integrated eyelet for a wrist lanyard, a pivoting side-to-side display to improve visibility for practitioners standing adjacent to patients, and tactile alignment features like horizontal grooves to assist in positioning the Vision Tunnel accurately. A removable lens insert accommodates different patient needs, while an adjustable forehead rest adds stability during use.

The visual and physical form of the device was carefully considered to ensure it appears approachable and non-intimidating to patients while remaining professional for clinical use. Aesthetically, the brief called for a hybrid design that blends cues from consumer electronics with the credibility of medical-grade equipment. To this end, Anvil applied refined surface detailing, integrated areas for branding and regulatory labels, and QuickSee’s signature orange accents to reinforce brand identity. Special care was taken to reduce any resemblance to a “gun-like” form, acknowledging the device’s close proximity to a patient’s face and the importance of making the interaction feel safe and comfortable for both user and patient.
