BrightSpec

BrightSpec spectraMRR
The BrightSpec spectraMRR, designed in collaboration with Anvil Studios in Seattle, Washington, is an advanced molecular rotational resonance spectroscopy instrument designed to bridge the gap between research-intensive discovery workflows and streamlined routine analysis. The original device had the visual language of an engineering proof-of-concept, and Anvil Studios was asked to elevate it into a unified, production-grade platform that communicates scientific rigor, cutting-edge innovation, and intuitive usability. By consolidating two key use cases—“Discover” for R&D users and “Routine” for lab technicians—into a single configurable product, BrightSpec gains both operational efficiency and scalability without the need to develop and maintain separate hardware lines. This approach enables flexible deployment of the system across a range of customer environments while maintaining a consistent industrial and user interface foundation.
The design constraints places strong emphasis on user experience, addressing the needs of both expert and non-expert users. The system supports optional automation through two different attachable autosampler modules, designed for quick configuration and batch processing. Recognizing that method development is often iterative and time-intensive, the instrument’s layout also considers the comfort and workflow of users engaged in long-duration, interactive sessions involving analysis and refinement of experimental protocols.
Aesthetically, the redesigned spectraMRR aims to look distinctive, cool, and purposeful—communicating high-performance and professionalism appropriate to advanced lab environments. Central to the design is showcasing the stainless steel chamber, which sets BrightSpec apart from the competition. Anvil’s industrial design integrates aesthetics and functionality with removable panels, thoughtful panel breaks and discreet access points for controls and maneuverability. The design incorporates premium cues such as a window for showcasing the stainless steel chamber, and finishes in white accent colors that align with BrightSpec’s brand language. With a build strategy favoring efficient, low-volume manufacturing methods—such as sheet metal forming and urethane castings—the external housing is engineered for easy assembly and serviceability using standard tools.
With diverse experience in industries ranging from consumer electronics, high-end audio, medical and life sciences, housewares and cycling, Anvil Studios is a product design company committed to bringing a broad range of solutions to the table.
