Dropworks
Dropworks Continuum
Dropworks, Inc. is a life science startup developing a bench top nucleic acid quantification machine to provide easy and accessible digital PCR. Dropworks partnered with Anvil Studios and Leap Design Group to define the user experience, industrial design, and mechanical engineering. The objective was to create a bold, eye-catching design that is cost effective to manufacture as well as easily identifiable in the lab environment.
We began our work effort by focusing on the overall user experience and identifying the architectural configuration for an optimized left-to-right work flow. We defined the locations and angles for the replaceable reagent compartment, touch screen display, sample inlet tray, and status indicator LEDs for a broad range of users. The client wanted something “mid-Century Futuristic” so our design explorations balanced contemporary trends with timeless design cues.
The final design intent consists of formed sheet metal with a dynamic part break-up that integrates the feet, side grips, and rear vent panel. A wrapping LED ribbon is trapped between the top and side panels, making it highly visible from any angle. The replaceable reagent cassettes mimic the machine’s clean and fluid design gesture, while creating an intentionally comfortable grip. Lastly, the selected color palette pairs a desaturated teal blue with bright white to create a sophisticated yet unique solution in the life science category.
With diverse experience in industries ranging from consumer electronics, high-end audio, medical and life sciences, housewares and cycling, Anvil Studios is a product design company committed to bringing a broad range of solutions to the table.
