Fluidigm :: Luna
Fluidigm partnered with Anvil Studios in Seattle, Washington, again to design the Luna; a next-generation benchtop Mass Cytometer developed to support biologists conducting high-dimensional single-cell analysis. As a more compact evolution of the CyTOF2 system, Luna focuses on the top-half housing of the instrument, measuring approximately 28 inches wide, 20 inches deep, and 31 inches tall. The design centers user interaction around the torch portal, which allows access to the internal torch assembly for routine maintenance. A sculpted, contoured outer shell discourages the placement of items on top of the unit, preserving both usability and visual clarity in cluttered lab environments.
From a design perspective, Luna was developed to convey the sophistication and precision expected of a premium scientific instrument, even as it targets entry-level adoption. The design concept theme selected was named “waterfall”, and it reflects the existing CyTOF2 design language, with elegant surfacing and thoughtful detailing that elevates the product’s presence in the lab. The top surface gracefully and fluidly moves from the top back left corner down to the front right corner to showcase the “torch”. A 4.5-inch display provides critical operational feedback without impeding access or workflow. Torch venting is designed with flexibility in mind, offering both vertical and rearward exhaust options to accommodate varying lab layouts.
With diverse experience in industries ranging from consumer electronics, high-end audio, medical and life sciences, housewares and cycling, Anvil Studios is a product design company committed to bringing a broad range of solutions to the table.
